Holy Quran in Chapter 3 Verse 103 mandates- ‘Hold firmly to the rope of Allah (God Almighty) all together and do not become divided. Remember His favour upon you, when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became brothers in faith.’ But if we look at the current state of affairs in the Middle East, it appears that many Muslims there have left this rope of Allah and of Islamic brotherhood which they came to hold centuries ago in the blessed land of Damasq (Damascus). And when they held together this rope firmly, they progressed in leaps and bounds so much so that they built a vast and prosperous Caliphate from the scratch and their dwelling places thrived amongst the most exquisite centers of learnings and innovations in the world. And now when they have gone astray from the teachings of their Islamic faith, they are fighting a brutal war amongst themselves in which they are killing and maiming one another so recklessly that they have belittled even their historical foes in the suppression of Muslims. In such a situation, it’s no wonder that they have become a laughing stock for certain Western Powers who leave no stone unturned in putting one Muslim group against other and then watch from a safe distance their gruesome bloodbath. It’s quite disturbing to see one group of Muslims (Turks) rejoicing and waving as their army tanks cross into Syria to attack another group of Muslim (Kurds). This is certainly not the way of Islam which provides-
A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah (God Almighty) has forbidden.Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 9
They have for sure gone astray from the teachings of Islam otherwise they would have not allowed certain pernicious western powers to turn the blessed land of Damasq into an experimenting lab for their destructive weapons and their destructive diplomacies.
At a time when Muslims of the Middle East should be fighting together to regain their lost glory by re-establishing a powerful Muslim State based on the Islamic Egalitarianism, they are fighting each other over worthless boundaries drawn by certain western conspirators over their greater homeland. At a time when they should be busy contributing towards establishing a New World Order based on justice and equity as mandated in the Holy Quran, they are busy filling the coffers of their historical foes by purchasing from them destructive weapons and that too for killing their own brethren. At a time when they should be lending a helping hand for the liberation of their suppressed Muslim brethren in Palestine and elsewhere, they are busy bartering their freedom and honor. They have become so incapable and unaware of the great Islamic injunctions that they can’t even negotiate a peace deal with fellow Muslims without bringing an inherently unfaithful foreign power on the negotiating table. They should certainly lament their moral and religious decay by thinking about those times when two hostile Muslim armies dropped their weapons and embraced each other on seeing the Holy Quran.
It is unfortunate that Muslims are increasingly getting driven and dictated by ethnic and national considerations these days rather than the common Muslim ideals and identity. Despite the repeated warnings in Holy Quran and by Prophet Muhammad (s), they seem to have given up their greater Islamic causes and are falling back upon ethnic and sectarian ambitions under the influence of some western powers and pernicious disbelievers. The Muslims of all ethnicities of the Middle East should not forget that it was the Islamic unity that liberated them from the age-old slavery of ruthless Roman, Persian and Egyptian empires. They should also not forget that it was Islam that transformed them from rags to riches, that transformed their barren land of barbarians into an oasis of learned scholars and Caliphs. By giving up their common and justified Islamic causes and by forsaking the greater Muslim unity and identity (that brought them unparalleled glory and prosperity), they would not only be committing a historic blunder of immense magnitude but also a great betrayal and injustice to their forefathers, to them and their coming generations.
This is high time that Muslims, especially those engaged in petty turf wars in the Middle East should contemplate the past and present state of affairs of their blessed homeland. They should understand the evil intentions of the pernicious powers behind the balkanization of the greater Ottoman State. The major purpose of the brazen exercise was to contain the rise of Islam and Muslims. While it is true Ottoman system was not a model Islamic governance system given that it was based on monarchy and hereditary succession, nonetheless, the continued existence of a large and powerful Muslim State in the Middle East posed a grave threat to the western depravity as it was always possible that righteous Muslims might rise up and seize control of that State and by mobilising its unified resources present a formidable challenge to the European imperialism/colonisation by offering an equatable alternative to the unjust and oppressive global order.
Keeping these factors in mind, Muslims of the Middle East should be worried about their greater losses and glory and not few oil wells. Oil wells will not make them a world power or put them in the category of civilized nations but the greater discursive and normative power will. By following the equitable and just principles of Islam, they stand to gain a lot in this world as well as in the next. They should remember that on the day of judgment they will be asked about their ‘Imaan’ and not their ethnicity or the nationality. They will be judged on the bases of their deeds good or bad and not their nationality.
In order to attain the unity and freedom of the Muslims therein, they must strive together to bring into existence an Islamic Government of Justice that will be in the service of the people. Keeping these greater considerations in mind, the more dominant Muslim ethnicities like Arabs and Turks should not hesitate in reaching out to their not so dominant brethren such as Kurds by making bonafide compromises on equitable bases for the sake of Islam. They must remember the mandate of the book of Allah in this regard which provides-
The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.Al-Quran 49:10
They must honor the words of the Holy Prophet (s) who said-
A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Judgement.Sahih al-Bukhari Volume 3, Book 43, Hadith 622
To conclude, if Muslims of the Middle East want to save themselves and their future generations from continued indignity and humiliation, they should dump their dirty cloaks of ethnic and national ambitions and put on the honourable robe of Islam with full humility and honesty and sort out all their differences on the basis of the equitable Islamic principles as enshrined in the Glorious Quran and as manifested in the actions of the Holy Prophet (s), learned Sahabas (r) and great Scholars of Islam (peace be upon them all). If they do so then Inshallah (God willing), they can easily overcome their bloody past, sufferings and trauma to rise again as the great and invincible soldiers of Islam who will march together under its glorious banner with the rest of the Ummah and righteous people of the world to take this humanity on the path of justice & righteousness and on the path of peace & prosperity.
May Almighty grant them guidance and good understanding. May He protect the life, honor, and dignity of all Muslims and true believers and may He ease the sufferings of Humanity. Ameen!
