What is Hind?

The Hind or al-Hind is the greater India inclusive of the whole subcontinent all other nations or states that were once part of India. It has been best described by Allama Iqbal in his famous poem ‘Mera watan wahi hai

Chishti ne jis zamee mein paigham-e-Haq sunaya;
Nanak ne jis chaman mein wahdat ka geet gaaya

Tatariyon ne jis ko apna watan banaya;
Jis ne Hezajiyon se dasht-e-Arab chhudaya

Mera watan wahi hai mera watan wahi hai

Yunaniyo ko jis ne hairan kar diya tha;
Saare jahan ko jis ne Ilm-o-Hunar diya tha

Mitti ko jis ki Haq ne zar ka asar diya tha;
Turko ka jis ne daaman heeron se bhar diya tha

Mera watan wahi hai mera watan wahi hai

Tute the jo sitaare Faaras ke aasmaa se;
phir taab de ke jis ne chamkae kehkashan se

Wahdat ki lai suni thi duniya ne jis makan se;
Meer-e-Arab ko aayi thandi hawa jahan se

Mera watan wahi hai mera watan wahi hai

Bande kaleem jis ke parbat jahan ke sina;
Nuh-e-Nabi ka aa kar thehra jahan safeena

Rifat hai jis zameen ki baam-e-falak ka zeena;
Jannat ki zindagi hai jis ki fiza mein jeena

Mera watan wahi hai mera watan wahi hai

TRANSLATION

The land where Chishti delivered the Message of God;
The garden where Nanak preached the Monotheism

The land which Tatars made their homeland;
For which Arabs abandoned the their wilderness

That is my homeland, the same is my homeland

Whose wisdom had left the Greeks bewildered;
Which gave knowledge and skill to the entire world

Whose soil has been given the healing effect by God;
Which had filled the pocket of the Turks with diamonds

That is my homeland, the same is my homeland

The stars which had fallen off the sky of Persia;
And then illuminated the entire universe

The place from which the entire world listened the tune of unity;
From where came the cool breeze to the Holy Prophet

That is my Homeland, the same is my Homeland

Whose people are like Kaleem and whose mountains are like Sinai;
Where landed the Prophet Noah’s boat with all its occupants

The land whose elegance is the stairway to the sky;
Living in whose environment is like living in the Paradise

That is my Homeland, same is my Homeland
